IIJ Provides Japan's First Cloud-based Relational Database Service on the Internet

TOKYO-April 10, 2013-Internet Initiative Japan Inc., (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774) one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the April 15, 2013, release of the IIJ GIO Database Service as an addition to the IIJ GIO Service lineup.

The IIJ GIO Database Service provides a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) that can be used to store and search various types of business data and information. It enables enterprise clients to easily use a fast, reliable database in the cloud. According to its own research, IIJ is the first operator in Japan to provide an RDBMS over the Internet as of April 10, 2013. IIJ has always offered database services as an option in the IIJ GIO Service lineup. However, this new service can be accessed via the Internet, allowing it to be used with existing IIJ cloud services as well as the cloud services of other companies and even the client's on-premise corporate systems. In addition to being useful in a production environment or as a backup system, the short one-month minimum contract also makes it ideal for use in an application development environment.

Service highlights

High speed and high reliability

Databases on virtualized environments still have transaction processing issues, but this service provides a high-quality RDBMS via the cloud with transaction processing capabilities on par with high-speed disks (SAS) on physical servers. The high reliability of the service is achieved through standard system redundancy and regular data backups created without interrupting normal operations. All data transactions are encrypted using SSL, and a firewall restricts who can access the system.

No construction or maintenance makes for easy implementation

The database servers are built and operated by IIJ on behalf of the client. The client does not need to purchase servers or software licenses, and IIJ responds to any system failures and applies all security patches, which greatly reduces the client's database management overhead. The client can choose from Oracle's MySQL or Oracle Database, and if the client already uses one of these applications, existing data, applications, and other assets can be used as is. Existing IIJ clients can apply online and start using the service on the same day and new clients can get up and running in five business days. With a minimum contract term of only one month, the service is ideal for temporary uses, such as in development or testing.

High cost-performance ratio

Monthly fees start at JPY 46,800 and fixed monthly fees mean unlimited queries and data transfers. Performance and data capacity can be increased on demand to meet client needs. The cost of the service is less than half the cost of building and operating a corporate system. IIJ is also launching a sales campaign with the service that could mean up to three months of free service.

IIJ will continue to develop easy-to-use database services.
