IIJ to Expand FPT HI GIO CLOUD Service Coverage to Hanoi, Vietnam

Building a new cloud platform in Hanoi to complement prior infrastructure in Ho Chi Minh City and creating a closed network between the two regions

TOKYO-January 28, 2019-Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced that it is adding a new infrastructure site in Hanoi-in addition to its current platform in Ho Chi Minh City-for FPT Telecom's domestic public cloud service, FPT HI GIO CLOUD. This is a joint project with Hanoi-based FPT Telecom, a subsidiary of Vietnam's largest IT conglomerate, FPT Group. Service at the new site will begin at the end of February, 2019.

In line with personal privacy protection laws and data localization (*1) in ASEAN countries, Vietnam's new cybersecurity legislation took effect in January 2019. The data subject to regulation spans a wide range of data sources, including personal data, data produced by individuals, and data related to cyberservice users. The new law obliges telecommunications providers and other operators that handle personal information to retain data in Vietnam and to notify the relevant authorities if a data leak occurs. Against a backdrop of more demands for appropriate data security and management measures, the need for cloud services with Vietnam-based infrastructure is on the rise. Having platforms located in the country allows operators to store and manage data domestically. By building a new site for infrastructure in Hanoi-the Vietnamese city that boasts the second-largest economy in the nation, after that of the political and financial center, Ho Chi Minh City-FPT Telecom and IIJ aim to expand the service's client base and to respond to a broader range of needs.

IIJ and FPT Telecom are building cloud infrastructure in the data center FPT Telecom owns in Hanoi that is identical to the one in Ho Chi Minh City, and both platforms will offer the same services. Along with the launch of Hanoi site, back-up feature will be added to automatically replicate data from one site to the other. Because both locations will be connected via a closed network, the firms will achieve redundancy in its cloud services infrastructure between the geographically distant regions. Furthermore, the partnership is increasing the lineup of additional storage to three types. Users can choose standard, high-speed, and low-speed disk operation speeds (IOPS), depending on their needs.
At the same time, the partnership will launch its "HI GIO Cloud Backup Solution with Veeam," through which users can automatically back up on-premises data on the FPT HI GIO CLOUD.

  • (*1)"Data localization" refers to regulations that, as a condition for doing business in a given country, require corporations and organizations to manage and process data using computers and other related equipment located in said country.
