IIJ to Launch a Private Connection Service to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Create redundant connections among multi careers and ensure business continuity by disaster recovery in Japan East and Japan West

March 15, 2021

TOKYO - March 15, 2021 - Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the launch of the IIJ Cloud Exchange Service for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect. This service uses closed networks to connect user sites with Oracle’s cloud service, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), via IIJ's dedicated private network.

IIJ Cloud Exchange Service for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect allows users to utilize Oracle's private connection service, FastConnect, via user-dedicated networks built on IIJ’s backbone network, the IIJ Private Backbone Service. With the IIJ Cloud Exchange Service, users can connect to OCI's gateways from their corporate networks using highly stable, low-latency connections.

The IIJ Cloud Exchange Service has been offering private connections to various cloud services such as Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, Amazon Web Service (AWS), and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) as a fully managed service. With the addition of OCI FastConnect support, customers can access multi-cloud environments built with varied configurations of OCI and other cloud services through a secure, seamless network environment.

The service is also compatible with Partner Connect(*1), a connection model for system integrators, joining a lineup of solutions offered by IIJ's partner companies.

Features of IIJ Cloud Exchange Service for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect

Reliable and stable connectivity between user sites and OCI

By linking the user-dedicated networks built on IIJ facilities that use the IIJ Private Backbone Service with OCI’s private connection service, FastConnect, users will experience highly stable, low-latency connections between their on-premises networks and data centers and OCI. The service offers two types of connections: private peering for use with the OCI IaaS, and public peering for use with object storage and other PaaS. Both types of connections can be used simultaneously on one closed network. NAT functionality (*2) is offered with public peering so that gateway equipment for NAT is not needed to set up at the customer site.

  • (*2)NAT (Network Address Translation): A technology for converting network addresses. It converts private IP addresses allocated by a company intranet and global IP addresses in both directions, enabling access to the cloud services.

Offers redundant networks through multiple carriers

The connection between IIJ's network and OCI allows for different routes that account for fault tolerance, as well as a redundant configuration with multicarrier, thus ensuring a stable connection to OCI. With service equipment established in Tokyo and Osaka, IIJ's DR strategy provides redundancy in Japan's Eastern and Western regions to meet its customers' needs.
Moreover, IIJ has 11 access points, from Hokkaido to Kyushu, connecting to the IIJ Private Backbone Service, allowing low-cost connections to the nearest access point. It also allows customers to build highly reliable multicarrier networks thanks to its support for access to many leading carriers.

Flexible multi-cloud environments can be built

Because the service supports private connections to multiple cloud platforms-including IIJ GIO (IIJ's cloud service), Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, AWS, and GCP-customers can flexibly build the multi-cloud environments that best suit their businesses by selecting OCI or other optimal cloud services based on their features.
