September 30, 2024
Internet Initiative Japan Inc.
TOKYO - September 30, 2024 - Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, TSE Prime: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, today announced the availability, from November 1, 2024, of an organization-wide packet sharing feature in the IIJ Public Safety Mobile Service, a mobile service exclusively for use by public agencies in communicating on-site information in a disaster. This feature enhancement will enable agencies to use the service more efficiently by sharing the data capacity of the same contract among all circuits within the organization.
IIJ Public Safety Mobile Service, which supports the Public Safety Mobile System (formerly known as Public Safety-LTE, or PS-LTE)(*) being promoted by the Japanese government, is a mobile service provided exclusively for police, fire departments and other public agencies, aimed at ensuring prompt and reliable sharing of disaster-site information by public agencies. The service provides public agencies with dedicated facilities and supports disaster priority telephone service, so that both voice and data communications services can be used smoothly, with minimal impact from facility congestion caused by ordinary users. Communication reliability is further enhanced by multicarrier support, by which a contract for a single communication circuit enables use of both NTT DOCOMO and KDDI circuits, so that if one mobile carrier network encounters congestion or service failure, service can be switched to the other carrier.
Since the start of IIJ Public Safety Mobile Service on April 1, 2024, it has been widely adopted by national and local government agencies, fire departments and others.
The amount of data use by public agencies tasked with responding to disasters varies widely between normal times and during a disaster, making it difficult to select the contracted capacity for each circuit and complicating budget management. To meet the needs of such clients, IIJ is providing the organization-wide packet sharing feature, enabling the data capacity of the same contract to be shared among all contracted circuits. Introduction of this feature means that all the contracted data capacity can be used efficiently and without waste, regardless of the number of circuits or the carrier type. Management of contracted capacity and budget management are also made easier.
