December 19, 2019: Shiroi Data Center Campus Tour for institutional investors
- You can find the presentation material here.
- Question: I found the data center to be very IIJ-like: much focus on technology. Please elaborate on the uniqueness of the data center.
- Answer: We built Shiroi Data Center to handle the explosion of digital data. The data center not only meets the usual requirements for ordinary data center but also brings better operation productivity by incorporating system module-based construction method for flexible expansion, outside-air cooling system for energy saving, and AI robotics for greater facility operation. For details, please refer to the following press releases: IIJ Completes the Shiroi Data Center Campus, Equipped with the Latest Energy-Saving and AI Technologies various network services.
- Question: You said this data center could potentially place approximately 6,000 racks in its approximately 40,000 square meter. How long do you expect to fill the facility?
- Answer: In May 2019, we opened its 1st phase facility of approximately 1,0000 racks. Currently (Dec. 2019), we have placed approximately 100 racks, 10% of the total, mainly for our own service facility and have been gradually expanding. While it is difficult to precisely forecast, especially due to the demands for data increase triggered by 5G and IoT, we expect to fill the facility in the next few years to decades.
- Question: What is your plan on gathering You said this data center could potentially place approximately 6,000 racks in its approximately 40,000 square meter. How long do you expect to fill the facility?
- Answer: Along with the current service facility's life cycle and/or IT equipment renewal period (usually 5 years), we plan to gradually migrate facility among our eastern Japan region. By improving operation production and lowering costs, we expect the migration should lead to about 20% of cost reduction in the future.
- Question: When do you plan to start housing services?
- Answer: We have already launched such services from the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020. Through our housing services, we can offer on-premise system needed to use with cloud services and/or a large-scale accommodation of several hundred racks and other various needs.
- Question: Are there any changes in investment plan for this data center?
- Answer: Our investment plan for this data center remains unchanged from the beginning. As an initial phase investment, we have spent approximately JPY3.0 billion on core facility and power-receiving equipment etc.
